In 2013, former NASA engineer Mark Aramli from Newport Rhode Island introduced the world to BedJet, a game-changing, innovative climate control system that you can use with any bed.
Despite the invention being dubbed a ‘catastrophe‘ on the ABC investment show Shark Tank, Aramli succeeded in having the last laugh, to date, his company has sold over 200,000 devices, generating hundreds of millions in sales.
Ten years later, Aramli and his development team, rather than rest on their laurels have come up with another unique innovation – the PowerLayer, a super-slim frame that turns almost any bed into a remote-controlled, fully adjustable bed.
PowerLayer is an exciting product because it’s so different to anything else. Normally, if you wanted to make your bed adjustable, you have to spend thousands on a new bed frame. But PowerLayer, measuring only 1.75 inch thick, reinvents the product category, allowing you to convert any existing bed into a fully adjustable bed frame.
I spoke to the BedJet inventor and CEO over email to catch up about the new invention. Read the interview below:
Jeff Mann (JM): After BedJet, why an adjustable bed? Where did the inspiration come from?
Mark Aramli (MA) As the chief engineer for BedJet, all of my inventions were born out of a personal need. I was a chronically hot and sweaty sleeper and I wanted something that could fix that, so I created the BedJet climate comfort system for beds.
Our PowerLayer adjustable bed technology was born out of my desire to have an adjustable bed while having a platform bed with storage drawers underneath in my bedroom. I surveyed the entire market, including going to one of the biggest bed trade shows in the world to see what was available.
As an engineer, I was utterly unimpressed by what I saw – everything was big, bulky, and changed the look of your bed. I didn’t want to change the look of my bed and the options were very limited for platform and storage beds, and the ones that would work raised the height of your mattress substantially.
So I decided to solve this problem myself, and thus we created the PowerLayer – the world’s thinnest and most compact adjustable frame that upgrades any existing bed with adjustability while staying nearly invisible.
JM :What was the research/design/development process?
MA: The reason why all adjustable beds look pretty much the same (big and bulky) is because they all use the same basic building blocks, especially the big bulky actuator motors that hang beneath the frame.
We realized quickly we would have to reinvent all the basic building blocks of an adjustable bed in order to create something that was ultra-slim and less than half the thickness of the best the industry was making.
It took five years of R&D and in the process we created the world’s most powerful actuator motor assembly by volume in the adjustable bed industry. We also created a unique patented lifting mechanism. We had to create things that never existed before in order to make PowerLayer do what it does.
JM: Describe the current market and demographic for adjustable beds
MA: Adjustable beds have gained popularity in recent years due to their customizable comfort and health benefits. Consumers have increasingly focused on and invested in improving their sleep and general health and wellness. The current market for adjustable beds is growing steadily and is expected to continue to do so in the coming years. The global adjustable bed market is expected to reach $9.8 billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 6.7% from 2021 to 2026* (According to a report by ResearchAndMarkets.com).
The demographic for adjustable beds is varied, as they are suitable for individuals of all ages and lifestyles. However, certain groups are more likely to purchase adjustable beds than others. These groups include:
1. Older adults: Ageing populations are more likely to experience sleep-related issues, such as snoring, acid reflux, and back pain. Adjustable beds can help alleviate these issues by allowing users to adjust the bed’s angle and provide support to the body.
2. People with health conditions: Individuals with medical conditions, such as sleep apnea, arthritis, or circulation issues, can benefit from adjustable beds as they offer customizable support to their bodies.
3. Athletes: Athletes can also benefit from adjustable beds, as they can use them to elevate their legs and promote muscle recovery after intense workouts.
4. Tech-savvy consumers: The recent interest in sleep tracking devices and sleep scores has attracted consumers who are interested in technology and convenience.
5. Remote workers: With the rise of remote work and flexible working arrangements, many are choosing to work from home in the comfort of their own bed
6. TV watchers, readers, and social media enthusiasts who prefer being able to relax in bed.
Overall, the market for adjustable beds is expanding as consumers become more aware of their benefits and seek to improve their lifestyle comfort in the bedroom, sleep quality and overall health.
JM: What are the main problems with adjustable beds?
MA: 1. Compatibility & Design Options: Traditional adjustable bases are big, bulky, unattractive and do not give consumers the same design options as traditional beds. Many force consumers to ditch their existing bed frame and eliminate their ability to choose something that matches their style – with PowerLayer you can make any bed setup adjustable, including storage and platform beds and even box springs, all while keeping the bedroom style you love.
Prefer a free standing adjustable bed base? PowerLayer can add beautiful solid wood legs and an optional headboard bracket for unlimited style choices. It’s your bed, your way.
2. Concealability: The zero-clearance bed frames that do exist are thick and bulky, which changes the entire look and feel of the bed and raises your mattress substantially – PowerLayer is only 1.75″ thick (the height of six iphones stacked) and is nearly invisible in your bed all while delivering top-of-class lifting capability.
3. Noise: You know what is sure to ruin a good night’s sleep? Noise! Some adjustable beds can be very noisy, which defeats the purpose of better sleep. PowerLayer was relentlessly endurance tested 20,000 times, the equivalent of constant up and down use for 20 years, to root out and eliminate any sources of any squeaks or motor noise.
4. Mattress retainer bars: These are needed to keep the mattress from sliding off the end of the bed, typical adjustable base mattress retainer bars are ugly, highly visible and have a hospital bed look to them. We engineered unique mattress retainer bars that can operate under your fitted sheet, meaning you never see them.
5. Sameness: Everyone has been content to release the same product with brand marketing being the only real differentiator. 5 years of R&D and 3 patents later, no other company in the world has figured out how to miniaturize adjustable bed lifting mechanisms into a package this small. We set out to completely disrupt the industry and obsolete the traditional adjustable base.
JM: What are some of the unique features of PowerLayer?
MA: Key unique features:
1.75″ ultra-thin design makes any bed adjustable while being nearly invisible when installed
Industry-leading 70* head rise and 45* foot rise maximizes the comfort position possibilities
900 lbs lift capacity folds even the thickest of mattresses
Corner retainer bars prevent side-to-side mattress shifting
Lightning fast, no-tool install gets you comfortable in bed quickly
Modular, plug-in multi-zone massage motors gives you the option not to pay for them if you don’t want them, and the ability to add them on later when you change your mind
JM: Why is the PowerLayer a disruptive product?
MA: The PowerLayer is the world’s highest performance, thinnest, and most compact adjustable bed technology. For the first time ever, all the comfort and sleep benefits of bulky adjustable bed bases have been miniaturized into an incredibly thin 1.75” layer that slips under any mattress on any bed. This is the thickness of six iPhones stacked, or a quarter and a nickel stacked – no other company in the world has figured out how to accomplish this. …we just did to adjustable beds what flat screen TV’s did to the old tube style TV’s 20 years ago.
We also engineered a way to hide ugly mattress retainer bars so you never see them.
The PowerLayer solves the compatibility, styling and design, noise, quality, and sameness problems plaguing traditional adjustable beds at an affordable price point.
